Anxiety app privacy, compared: who tracks you and who collects nothing (2026)

Every App Store page carries a privacy label the developer has to declare. We read fourteen of them, panic, grounding, breathing, and meditation apps, so you don't have to. The short version: Calm, Balance, Breathwrk, Rootd, Dare, and Mellow declare "Data Used to Track You"; Headspace, Finch, Insight Timer, and MindShift collect data linked to you; and exactly four apps, Reground, PanicShield, Anchor, and NerveCalm, say "Data Not Collected". Labels checked on the US App Store, August 2026.

How we read the labels, and how we picked the apps

Apple requires every app to declare what it collects, in four categories, from worst to best: Data Used to Track You (shared with data brokers or used for cross-app advertising), Data Linked to You (collected and tied to your identity), Data Not Linked to You (collected, kept anonymous), and Data Not Collected. An app can carry several at once; we list each app under the strongest category it declares. We picked apps people actually get recommended for panic and anxiety, plus the big meditation subscriptions for contrast. A disclosure: we make Reground, one of the apps below. The labels are Apple's, not ours, open any listing and check.

Labels and prices read from each app's public US App Store page, August 2026. Each app is listed under the strongest category its label declares; most declare several. Labels are self-reported by developers under Apple's rules, they're a floor of honesty, not an audit.

Why the label matters more here than in most categories

The moment you open a panic app is, almost by definition, a moment you'd rather keep to yourself. What you write in a worry journal, when your panic spikes, how often, that's mental-health data, some of the most sensitive data a phone can hold. "Data Used to Track You" on a panic app means some of your data feeds advertising systems owned by other companies. That's not a scandal, it's a business model, but it's worth knowing before you type your 3 a.m. thoughts into one. We've written more on how an app can prove its privacy architecturally rather than just promise it.

Which private anxiety app should you get?

If you want private and full-kit: Reground (ours)

$5.99 once for 22 techniques, breathing, grounding, writing, and body practices, with a "Data Not Collected" label.

No account, no server, no analytics, everything runs on the phone and works offline, in airplane mode too. Honest limits: it's new (launched 2026), iPhone-only, English-only, and there's no community or coaching. Six techniques are free forever. For how it stacks up on price, see our panic-app cost comparison.

Evidence labels for each technique are published here.

If your budget is zero and privacy still matters: PanicShield

Free, no ads, no in-app purchases, and a "Data Not Collected" label.

Paced breathing plus real CBT exposure training from a small team. The review base is small (4.9★ from 50 ratings), but among genuinely free apps it's the one that collects nothing. MindShift CBT is also free and made with clinicians, just know its label reads "Data Linked to You" and it wants an account.

If you want the big libraries and accept the trade: Calm or Headspace

Thousands of hours of content, sleep stories, courses, and the polish only $70/yr can buy.

Nothing here says the big apps are bad at what they do, they're clearly good. Just read their labels the way you'd read a nutrition label: Calm declares tracking, Headspace declares data linked to you. If the content is worth that to you, that's a fair trade, as long as you knew you were making it.

Are App Store privacy labels trustworthy?

They're self-declared, so treat them as a floor, not a guarantee. A developer who lies on the label violates App Store rules and risks removal, which is real pressure, but nobody audits every app. The strongest signal is architecture: an app with no account, no server, and offline operation has nothing to collect with. That's the standard we hold grounding apps to as well, and the reason Reground's label isn't a promise, it's a description.

Common questions

Which anxiety apps don't collect any data?

Four apps in this comparison carry the App Store "Data Not Collected" label: Reground ($5.99 once), PanicShield (free), Anchor: Anxiety Release (free), and NerveCalm ($29.99/yr). Every other app we checked, including Calm, Headspace, Rootd, Dare, Breathwrk, Balance, Finch, and Insight Timer, declares that it collects data in some form. US App Store labels, August 2026.

What does "Data Used to Track You" mean on the App Store?

It means the developer declares that some of your data, often identifiers or usage data, is shared with data brokers or used to follow you across other companies' apps and websites, typically for advertising. It's the strongest of Apple's privacy label categories, and in August 2026 it appears on Calm, Balance, Breathwrk, Rootd, Dare, and Mellow.

Do Calm and Headspace track you?

By their own App Store labels, August 2026: Calm declares "Data Used to Track You" and "Data Linked to You". Headspace declares "Data Linked to You" but not the tracking category. Neither is anonymous; the difference is whether data leaves for other companies' advertising.

Can a free anxiety app be private?

Yes, but don't assume it. PanicShield and Anchor are free and labeled "Data Not Collected". MindShift CBT is free but declares "Data Linked to You". Free often means the data is the price, so check the App Privacy section of the listing rather than the price tag.

Why we built Reground this way

We didn't add privacy to Reground, we removed everything that needed data. There's no account because nothing syncs. No analytics because we don't watch you. No server because every technique runs on the phone. The App Store label says "Data Not Collected" because there is nothing to collect it with, and that stays true in airplane mode, in a shelter, or anywhere else your worst moment finds you.

22 techniques therapists actually teach, honest research labels on every one, and a price you pay once, like buying a good book. Six techniques are free forever.

"Data Not Collected" isn't our promise, it's our architecture.

Six techniques free forever, no account, works offline. See if it earns the one payment.

$5.99 once unlocks everything. No subscription. Ever.
